This post announces the new JamesEarlOwensPhD Substack channel by publishing my latest study. My name is James Earl Owens. I am an activist and researcher, with graduate training in quantitative and qualitative methods from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (PhD) and the University of Illinois, Chicago (MA). I co-authored the entry ‘Journalism’ (with Prof. Kevin Barnhurst) in Blackwell’s International Encyclopedia of Communication. My work appears in Editor & Publisher, Huffington Post, and elsewhere. I also served as a campaign writer for US Rep. Bobby Rush. I organized against the US invasion of Iraq, an unjust war based on lies. I also participated in movements for the humanity, security, and liberation of the Palestinian people, and against antisemitism and fascism.
This study of the news sources chosen to speak on The Roundtable is part of a larger research project on the program that I am conducting. I will publish additional reports on that research in the near future. I offer this provisional report due to the urgent need to expose how WAMC’s sourcing practices discriminate against Palestinians, Arabs, and college student protesters and enable harmful mischaracterizations of those persons and movements advocating for an end to the horrific violence perpetrated by the US and Israel against the people of Palestine. As the station reports, “WAMC's listening area reaches parts of seven states, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire; as well as parts of Canada. With over 400,000 monthly listeners, WAMC ranks among the most-listened-to public radio stations in the United States” (WAMC, 10/20/2023).
